Over a quarter of Brits work over 300 hours a year for free

‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) is a concept on the rise with experts predicting more than one-third of organisations will stop providing devices to workers by 2016 (Telework Week). New research from Cint and FluidSurveys has found that over half of Brits believe this trend is encouraging them to work outside of their contracted office hours.

In a survey of over 935 British people, 56% felt having a personal smartphone or tablet for work purposes encourages them to do more ‘out of office’ work. This was supported by 59% of those polled admitting to working outside of office hours. The primary function for this was to ‘reply to emails’ and ‘answer phone calls’.

Over a quarter (26%) worked over six hours or more a week in addition to their contracted hours. This figure was significantly higher in the US, where nearly three-quarters (71%) claimed to spend part of their free time working, over a third (40%) attributing over six hours of their personal time per week to work.

However, when it came to remuneration for the use of their personal devices, nearly two-thirds (63%) stated that they covered the cost of using their smartphone entirely personally (615 responses). Only 22% stated that their company contributed in full to the cost of their smartphone charges, with a further 11% subsidising in part. However, 60% of these individuals felt it appropriate that their company should contribute to some or all of the cost.

The research, carried out by Cint, a provider of technology for obtaining market insight, and online survey software company Fluid Surveys, questioned 1,969, between April and May 2013, adults working in the US and the UK to find out their opinions on the rise of BYOD and how it affects their work and home life.

The rise of BYOD is transforming our workplaces, as millions of people use their personal smartphones and tablets to access work emails, documents, and also make telephone calls. While this may be necessary as firms tighten their budgets during the economic downturn, it is interesting to understand what British and American workers feel about this phenomenon, and whether it affects their personal life. Indeed, our survey indicated that many feel the use of their own technology leads to them spending more of their free time dealing with work.

The BYOD revolution is highly capable of bringing a positive shift to the workplace. Allowing employees to have personal devices available to them at any time enhances overall flexibility and encourages more convenient working practices. Employees can improve time management and employers can enhance the management of remote teams, across times zones – a scenario that is more and more common in our digitally connected world. I hope these survey results help to improve the use of personal devices in the workplace, to better understand the needs of employers and employees alike.
